George Carlin, has died of heart failure. He was 71. I'm sure there are more impressive or informative eulogies, but for me, George Carlin will always be the first comedian I ever listened to and remembered (key word).
It was the mid-90's. Dad and I were driving to Gen Con (back when it was in Milwaukee), and he put in a tape into the Mazda 323. Usually he forced me to listen to his questionable taste in music, but this time was different. The tape commenced with Steven Wright, then some lewd Bette Middler stand-up, but the B-side was George Carlin.
My dad had never swore in front of me, didn't listen (as far as I knew) to movies or music with swearing, and judging by the sci-fi and fantasy paperbacks he owns, didn't read books with swearing. So here, on this tape, was a revelation: I could laugh at comedy that was funny, raw, and extremely salty, with MY DAD!
It turned out he had more Carlin tapes- I listened to them all until the magnetic tape warped, and then started to illeagally download tracks off bearshare.
So George Carlin, god bless you, and hopefully, we'll rub elbows when my time is up.
In other news:
- Nikki got to The Hague safely, and her luggage should be in her hands as we speak. I miss her, but it sounds like she's doing just fine, and it makes me feel better.
- I watched Perseloplis last night, it's terrific. Out tomorrow!
- Saturday night, I got drunk at JP and Ali's. Saw a lot of people I hadn't seen since graduation, and got a chance to relax after the plane drama...
